Puppy School is founded by APBC registered behaviourist and author Gwen Bailey. Classes are for puppies under 20 weeks at the start of the course, we have this age limit to create a safe environment for young puppies, so they can learn and grow in confidence. We encourage you to bring your puppy to classes as soon as your puppy is vaccinated and your vet has confirmed it is safe for them to mix with others. All Puppy School courses are run weekly (unless breaks weeks are listed) over 6 weeks, with each class lasting 1 hour. Our classes progress gradually, building on your puppy's understanding and reliability. Class sizes are kept small (5-6 puppies) to ensure that I can provide some individual guidance to all families attending.
Times & Locations
Puppy School Lingfield - Thursday 17:00
Puppy School Hartfield - Monday 16:30
Puppy School Uckfield - Thursday 10:00
The course curriculum covers settling calmly on a bed, puppy play biting and appropriate toy play, handling (grooming, husbandry procedures), loose lead walking, accepting people near food and chews, basic positions and stay, recall and learning how to greet people and other dogs appropriately. We are family friendly and love having young people attend under the supervision of an adult. I use reward-based, ethical methods to ensure a positive learning experience for both you and your puppy. My Complex Canine's goal is to give puppies the best start in life, helping them become well-behaved dogs that remain with the same family for life.
When you book onto one of our Puppy School courses you will be sent a Puppy School Manual which will help you get started on the right path straight away as well as providing you check points after each classes to keep you on track. You will also get access to a private area of the Puppy School website called The Puppy Club which week-by-week guidance, video reminders of the class exercises and articles written by experts based on scientific evidence covering all kinds of puppy issues. My Complex Canine’s Youth Club course runs for 4 weeks, each session lasting around one hour.
The course is designed for puppies and dogs that have attended Puppy School or previously completed positive reward-based puppy foundation training. When your puppy gets older the world becomes a very exciting place, during this time it can be hard to get their attention, have they got selective hearing and you are no longer the most exciting thing in their world.
This course will help you to build your dog’s ability to, focus on you out and about look, move away from things that are exciting , be calmer around distractions
Areas covered in the course;
Building self-control - leave and drop cues
Proximity exercises for recall and Lead walking to disengage from distractions
Distance control with wait, doorway manners & distance positions
Calm boundary training to ensure they can settle anywhere
Times & Locations
Group Dog Training Lingfield - Thursday 18:15
Group Dog Training Hartfield - Monday 17:45
Group Dog Training Uckfield - Thursday 11:15
Class numbers will remain small 5-7, in order to allow for lots of time for coaching and individual feedback. You will receive weekly training handouts and online supporting content to help you to practice in between classes and at the end of the course you will receive a certificate of achievement & rosette.
Group classes are not suitable for every dog, a group environment will not be the best option for your dog to learn if they are worried by dogs or people, we would instead, recommend training on a 1:1 basis. If you are unsure of what option will be best for you, please contact me prior to booking.

In the month of February people around the world will celebrate Valentines Day, a day to celebrate love, affection, and friendship through gestures like sending messages, giving flowers, chocolates, and cards. When thinking about showing our love to our canine friends we might consider, a new toy or tasty chew, a walk in their favourite place, or a play date with a canine friend!

Let’s consider if we could instead think about what our dogs benefit most from. For me, it would be consistency, understanding and time. Our dog’s benefit from connection that it is always present and available. Most dogs love to work with us humans and if we have a two-way communication, with us listening to them, then they offer more, because they feel secure and motivated.
This may look like you choosing to spend five minutes a day, every day practicing some focus or engagement games with your dog. These exercises should be fun for both you, and your dog, so that is not seen as a chore, or another thing to tick off the list.
These small moments of one-on-one time build trust and have an impact on longer-term training goals. Clear communication reduces frustration on both sides. When dogs understand what’s expected of them, they’re more confident and more relaxed. Everyday dog training situations like walking on the lead, meeting people or settling at home become easier because the dog feels supported rather than managed. That sense of emotional safety is what allows trust to grow.

A relationship is changeable; you will have great days together and sometimes more difficult days. The aim is to create some time each day to build training foundations that can adapt as life changes! So, with one small habit, even if it is a tough day, you can still maintain this connection time to maintain and build your relationship.
Instead of spending money on a gift for valentines day, I encourage you to think about one small way you could invest in connecting with your dog that you can easily commit to every day! Here are some easy, quick ideas;
Boost that recall cue!
When making your food (whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner) try using a dog friendly bit of food for a bit of recall training.
1.Keep a bit of food (like a blueberry/strawberry/piece of chicken) in your hand.
2.Move quickly into another room as you use your recall cue ‘come’
3.If your dog comes running, then reward with the food.
4.If they do not come running, then next time show them the food before running to another room!
Find it
When waiting for the kettle to boil. Get a handful of treats/or their biscuit kibble if you feed dry food.
Show your dog a piece of food, gently toss it a short distance away and say “find it” as it lands. Let them sniff it out and eat it, then wait for them to naturally reorient back to you. When they do, mark that moment with a calm “yes” or praise, and repeat.
As your dog gets the idea, you can gently increase the challenge by placing food slightly out of sight, scattering a few pieces, or playing in the garden. The key is keeping it easy enough that your dog stays relaxed and successful.
What makes this game so valuable is that it encourages natural behaviours like sniffing, which helps dogs regulate their emotions. It also builds engagement, because your dog learns that checking back in with you leads to good things happening.
If you are looking for private dog training or group puppy classes and would like support in building strong training foundations and strengthening your relationship with your puppy or dog, I’d love to help!
